Making tens!

We have been playing card games and using tens frames to practise our 'make ten' facts. We want to get REALLY fast at recalling these facts so that we don't even have to think about them. One game we know how to play is 'Fish for Ten'. Want to learn how to play? Check in again next week and we will have a tutorial to show you how.

Problem solving

As the sun was shining today we decided to head outside with our maths equipment and chalk to work on some problems. We worked in pairs to solve problems like 23+12= __.
We used equipment to show our thinking, then recorded our steps on the concrete in chalk.

Here Leigh-James is telling Anahera what to do to solve the problem... He is 'The Brain' and Anahera is being 'The Hand'. Leigh-James had to make sure his instructions were clear enough for Anahera to follow and she had to listen carefully to make sure she was doing what he had asked her to do. They were a great team! They then swapped roles and Leigh-James became 'The Hand'.

In this picture Freya is being 'The Brain' and telling Brittany - 'The Hand' what to do to solve this problem. They worked really well together too!

Place Value

We have been learning how many tens there are in numbers.

In the number sixty there are six tens.

There are some clues in the word sixty that can help us to remember how many tens there are... 'ty' means 'lots of ten' and we can also see the word six so it is easy to know that there are 6 lots of ten in sixty.

In sixty-three there are 6 lots of ten and 3 ones.

We can use equipment to show this.
